7 (Refer to FAA-CT-8080-2G, Figure 21.) You have been hired by a farmer to use your small UA to inspect his crops. The area that you are to survey is in the Devil`s Lake West MOA, east of area 2. How would you find out if the MOA is active?
A. Refer to the legend for special use airspace phone number.
This is the correct answer. And it isn't.
The legend on the VFR Sectional chart does describe the MOA, altitudes, the hours of operation and the controlling facility name. But not the facility phone number.
DUATS and WxBrief both record that you requested the information and could be used as proof that you did a preflight briefing.
To determine if an MOA is active, you have a few options:
You may call Flight Service (1-800-WX-BRIEF) to ask if the MOA is active and the contact phone number.
Check to see if there is an active NOTAM from the FAA NOTAM website
Check on DUATS. Direct User Access Terminal Service is a service contracted by the FAA to provide free aviation weather briefings, flight plan filing, and flight planning software
Call via phone the ARTCC over the area which in this example would be Minneapolis Center. Use this FAA link to find the ARTCC phone numbers.
